In today’s society, there is an abundance of available data. Therefore, the challenge lies in harmonising and making this data easily accessible and usable. NUTRI-KNOW addresses this by creating a Community of Practice (CoP) that shares extensive information on organic fertilisation and nutrient recycling.
“Often there is a lack of awareness that many innovative strategies have been successfully tested before.”

CREA, translated from Italian
The Italian news outlet Terra e Vita recently featured our work. Journalist Massimiliano Saltori interviewed Maria Valentina Lasorella from the Research Centre for Agricultural Policies and Bioeconomy (CREA) and Lorella Rossi from the Italian Biogas Consortium about our project.
Key takeways from the article:
- NUTRI-KNOW’s CoP is organised like a forum. It allows users to ask questions on various topics related to fertiliser production, transport, distribution, and processing technologies.
- The CoP helps farmers and livestock breeders learn about good agricultural practices, organic fertilisation systems, and solutions to reduce dependency on mineral fertilisers.
- Digestate, a by-product of anaerobic digestion, contains valuable nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. This makes it a useful organic fertiliser.
- Italy is second in Europe for digestate use. However, the Nitrates Directive restricts the use of digestate in agriculture.
- To fully unlock the potential of digestate, the Nitrates Directive needs to be revised. Read our blog post about our feedback letter to learn about potential revisions.
