RENURE
Preparing the agricultural sector for the use of ammonium salt fertilisers (ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulphate) by making the transition from research-based field trials to a practical evaluation at the farmer’s premises
The Flemish agricultural sector faces a dual challenge of excess animal nutrients and continued fertiliser use. In response, the RENURE criteria were proposed by the European Comission in 2020 to safely utilise recovered nitrogen from manure as a substitute for chemical fertilisers. The stripping and scrubbing process, a market-ready technology, extracts ammonium salts from manure for use in RENURE products. This process involves stripping gaseous ammonia from manure or digestate and then scrubbing it with a strongly acidic solution to form ammonium sulphate or nitrate. The estimated cost of the operational installation is €100-150/m3, requiring an annual manure processing capacity of approximately 20,000 tons for economic viability.
Field trials conducted in 2022 and 2023 showed that ammonium nitrate recovered from animal manure performs comparably to artificial fertilisers in effectiveness and fertilising value. Application methods such as row tiller or injection are preferred for low-emission purposes.
