Grass2Algae
Evaluating the use of grass juice for growing microalgae as an additional source of income for farmers
The Grass2Algae operational group explores utilising grass juice from roadside or low-quality grass as a nutrient source for cultivating microalgae, offering additional income opportunities for Flemish farmers. Grass juice, comprising 40-60% of grass weight, contains essential macro and micronutrients crucial for microalgae growth. Through a pressing process, grass juice is separated from fibers and used as a medium for microalgae cultivation. Initial results suggest that grass juice can serve as a viable nutrient source for producing protein-rich microalgae biomass. However, pH adjustment may be necessary to optimise microalgae growth and minimise microbial contamination. Further pilot-scale studies are warranted to fully understand the potential of grass juice as a nutrient medium for microalgae cultivation.
